Smart Parking at Port Stephens

Port Stephens Council faced a significant parking challenge during peak tourism periods, with the local population surging from 19,000 to over 120,000. To address growing congestion and limited parking capacity, Council implemented a Smart Parking program across four key precincts, Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, and Birubi Headland. The initiative introduced smart meters, time restrictions, and integrated digital enforcement tools to manage demand and increase accessibility. Each precinct operates with a dedicated infrastructure reserve, enabling community-driven reinvestment and strategic planning. The Port Stephens Smart Parking ecosystem combines compliance technology, hardware, software, and place-based strategy, delivering a scalable model for sustainable tourism infrastructure.
