2025 Road Management Report
NSW councils manage 80% of the state’s road network, over 167,000 km of roads and nearly 11,000 bridges, valued at $71.5 billion. The 2025 Road Management Report, part of the Road Asset Benchmarking Project, examines the condition, performance, and funding of these assets, highlighting strong progress in sealed road upgrades and bridge replacements. However, more than $5 billion in assets remain in poor condition, particularly unsealed roads and ageing timber bridges. Councils invested $2.9 billion in 2023–24, yet a $164 million annual funding gap risks future service levels. The report calls for better alignment between financial and asset planning, increased investment, and targeted risk management to safeguard infrastructure for future generations.
