The Local Government Finance and Asset Management Forum will bring together senior finance, engineering, asset management, and executive leaders from across local government to explore the critical relationship between financial sustainability and long-term infrastructure stewardship.

As councils face increasing pressure to maintain ageing assets, manage growing renewal backlogs, and deliver community expectations within constrained budgets, the need for stronger alignment between finance and asset management has never been greater.

This collaborative forum, delivered in partnership with LG Professionals, NSW, will provide a unique opportunity for practitioners and decision-makers to examine key challenges, share perspectives, and develop practical solutions that support sustainable service delivery and informed investment decisions.

We are pleased to announce that Bola Oyetunji, Auditor-General for New South Wales, has confirmed his participation and will present at the forum, sharing insights into financial accountability, governance, and the role of sound asset management in supporting sustainable local government outcomes.

Through presentations, panel discussions, and a facilitated workshop, participants will contribute to the development of a joint communiqué outlining key recommendations and actions for the sector.

Topics may include:

• Backlog management and long-term renewal planning to support sustainable asset outcomes

• Fair value considerations and the relationship with Long-Term Financial Planning (LTFP)

• Moving beyond depreciation as a proxy for renewal demand, with a greater focus on average asset condition as a more meaningful indicator

• Development of a national asset condition database to support evidence-based decision-making

• Defining and measuring appropriate service levels for community infrastructure

• Tangible outcomes, including a joint communiqué or position paper with clear recommendations and action items for the sector
