Managing Sealed and Unsealed Local Roads
Tuesday 24 June 2025 at 10:00 am - Wednesday 25 June 2025 at 12:00 pmThis workshop will address the AUS-SPEC Roadworks and bridges specification package. It will highlight the documents developed for the design, construction, and maintenance of sealed and unsealed roads for low-volume traffic. Reference documents like the Design reference and checklists, Construction reference and Schedules, TECHguides, TECHreports and TECHnotes will be discussed to support councils to develop their own specifications in house.
The workshop will explain how these documents can be implemented at the council level, so that all councils can design, construct and maintain their road network, manage council gravel pits, and improve locally available materials effectively and efficiently.
Course Objectives
- Gain an in-depth knowledge of the AUS-PEC local government specification system.
- Get a succinct overview of the AUS-PEC Roadworks and bridges package.
- Understand how to implement AUS-PEC road specifications in councils.
- Understand how the specifications and the reference documents can assist Councils to effectively manage and maintain their road network.
- Learn better techniques to manage their gravels pits, improve the performance of locally available materials and use various other methods to prolong the life of sealed and unsealed road networks.
Outcomes
- Better understanding of the local government specification system using SPECbuilder, the online specification compiler.
- Implementation of better techniques to effectively design, construction and maintain council road assets.
- Capacity to make informed decisions whether to seal an unsealed road.
- Bridging the gap where there is lack of in-house engineering capability and implementing improved practices across the asset life cycle.
- Significant improvement in the structural integrity, safety and performance of sealed and unsealed roads.
