Note:  If you are an employee of a Local Council, your nomination will need to be approved by Council as this course is funded by Transport for NSW.  Please contact Elsie Pathmanathan on 02 8267 3008 or email elsie.p@ipweansw.org to obtain a nomination form

Course outline

The aim of the workshop is for participants to prepare a work plan/strategy for the development of a road safety strategic plan for their Council.

The Guide provides practitioners with a sequence of steps as the most direct route to the development of a plan that will be accepted and integrated into the Council’, management processes. These include identifying stakeholders, using crash data effectively and the process for developing strategies. The guide includes examples of the types of issues and barriers they may encounter, which may be avoided or resolved with preparation. The emphasis is on effective and timely communications. It is recommended that participants bring a copy of their own Council’s organisational chart and any reports or information on current road crash trends in their LGA.

Presenter

Dr Liz de Rome is a psychologist and epidemiologist with over 25 years’ experience in road safety research, data analysis and stakeholder consultations with a particular focus on Local Government.

In 1998, Liz developed the first edition of A guide to developing Council road safety strategic plans, based on the findings of a demonstration project involving 15 NSW local councils. She has assisted over 40 councils across NSW through the process of developing their own road safety strategic plans. In 2006 and again in 2019, Liz revised and updated the Guide to accurately reflect changes in best practice and government reporting and planning requirements.

Liz’s prior experience with Local Government includes as manager of the IPWEA Road Safety Speakers Bureau services. She was also engaged by the RTA to present workshops for parents about the graduated driver licencing scheme (GLS) at councils across Sydney. Liz is a member of the NSW and National Executive Committees of the Australasian College of Road Safety.
