2020 Local Roads Conference
A collaboration between IPWEA NSW and Local Government NSW
The annual NSW Local Roads Congress will be delivered as a virtual conference this year, with sessions on Monday 1st June 2020 and Monday 15th June 2020.
Please find a copy of the draft program here.
The Conference is focussed on the critical role of local government as a provider of local and regional transport infrastructure in partnership with the state and federal governments.
The theme for this year’s event is Connecting the Dots – the connections being Emergency Management, Management of Assets, Road Safety, and Resources – strategic areas which are interrelated and of primary importance to local government.
The first session will focus on the challenges associated with ‘Saving lives on local roads’. Fifty percent of accidents with a fatal outcome in NSW occur on roads maintained and operated by local government. We will need to work smarter, with all levels of government, to provide safer roads to the community.
The second session is focussed on the demands related to ‘providing high quality infrastructure to the community’. Ongoing challenges as a result of limited funding for maintenance of our road and transport network are now magnified by the added challenge to repair infrastructure after natural disasters, like drought, flooding and fires. While providing better roads for the community, local government also needs to be more resilient to reduce future disruption and extensive repair bills.
The Local Roads Conference is offered by the Roads and Transport Directorate, a joint initiative between IPWEA NSW and Local Government NSW to optimise roads and transport outcomes. The Directorate acts as a focus for research activities, provides technical advice to assist member councils and makes submissions on behalf of its members.
The first NSW Local Roads Congress was held in December 2005 and has been held annually since then. The purpose of the Congress is aimed at Mayors / Councillors / Directors of Engineering and is intended to address policy issues rather than technical issues.
This year we will have the opportunity to also invite the wider public works community, as it will be a virtual event.
Each council staff member that registers for the Local Roads Conference will be asked to nominate a Councillor for a complimentary registration. Please enter the details of your nominated Councillor (salutation, first name, surname, job title, company/council, email address, phone number) as part of your registration on the next page. Alternatively, if you would like to submit these details later please email email@example.com along with a copy of your invoice.
*Please note that this is limited to one (1) Councillor accompanying one (1) full paying delegate registration
